I love reading these posts for the glimpses of LA they give me. If I get there this summer (trying!) Jacaranda will be at the top of my list. Most coincidentally, I was in NYC today for a visit to the studios of WNYC and I crossed town afterwards and stopped in at Wild Sorrel. A sweet shop and excellent addition to all the cookbook stores sprinkled across the country.
regarding Libby, a friend just turned me onto it, so that was timely. But, as I wrote her, who doesn't love free books ? Yet, I want to support both authors and independent bookstores which is why I love bookshop.org. ! you can buy books there and choose the still independent bookstore that receives credit for the purchase.
We had a huge jacaranda in the yard of our first house in West L.A. I always thought the carpet of lilac it left in its wake was a small price to pay for the beauty and joy it gave when in peak blossom. The restaurant named for the tree also sounds like a winner. Hoping to give it a try.
As for KCRW’s Good Food, I’ve been listening forever, and it’s a true treasure, as are you and the whole crew behind the show and the station itself. It and you deserve our support!
I went to Marshall with Eve Babitz. I liked her. She didn’t fit the Eisenhower white ethos of the school in the late ‘59’s-early ‘60’s. She was interesting and kind and not trying to be “different.” She was simply herself.
I don’t recall what she wrote. Read her book so long ago. I graduated January 1961. I learned at a reunion that I was considered a radical. My parents were Stevenson Democrats.
Great info. It's making me think I shouldn't take jacarandas for granted. Had no idea Eve Babitz went to Marshall! My old boss gifted me with all her books and I haven't cracked the cover yet. Did you know she took the cover photo for the first Black Oak Arkansas album?

Unfortunately they only flower in the spring

It's so interesting to read her take on Marshall before I went. So different only a couple years or so later.

You’ve IDd the best streets in BH for the Purple Rain!

Are you kidding re: Black Arkansas?! You need to read her. She was just a bit older than we were so her take it so interesting.
